Why My Vermont Family Photo Sessions are NOT Right for Everyone

Mom with teenaged daughter

Now is a great time to think about Vermont Family Photo Sessions!

It’s important to find a photographer whose style speaks to you. Yes, of course, the style of your photographer’s art is important! Personal style is important too.

Having your family photographed can bring up some feelings of vulnerability. (What if the kids act like… KIDS?!) Most people don’t love standing in front of the business end of a camera being told to adjust their body just so. Add pressure to “act happy” and it could get pretty stressful. But, it doesn’t need to.

My Sessions are Outdoors

I am a 100% certified “outdoorsy” person. I love natural light. I love the change of the seasons! I love to exercise outdoors and my ideal vacation involves more time outside than inside.

All of my family photo sessions are outdoors. (I wrote more about outdoor photo sessions a few weeks ago.) I love watching families connect in nature — even if that is “just” their backyard. Nature makes me feel alive and people who love working with me also feel very connected to nature. (And, yes, many of us long for more time in nature. Real life. I get it!)

Stories and Connections are the Focus

The stories and connections happening in your family are the focus of my sessions. I love photographing parents with their kids and siblings being siblings.

Before the session, we’ll do a check in so I know what’s new for you. For example, kids seem to update their smiles pretty frequently and I always like to capture the latest toothed or toothless grin. We can also touch base about any special needs so that I can support everyone in feeling comfortable and seen.

Emphasis on Emotive Images that Reflect this Season of Your Life

I don’t know about you, but this pandemic season of my life has been a bit… tough. I’m a proficient worrier and a global pandemic wasn’t even on my top 20 list before early 2020.

But, I’ve also found that all this time together has connected my immediate family in new, unpredicted and special ways. I bet the same is true for you. Let’s capture that!

I hope that every parent looks back on their gallery and is reminded of just how very much they have overcome and accomplished to build the perfectly imperfect family they trusted me to photograph.

Family Photo Sessions Last about 90 Minutes

Think of your photo session as a chance to be with your children and spouse in pretty light. I know no one in your family wants to pose for 90 minutes. I bet that being given the freedom to snuggle and relax and laugh with your kids for a bit will feel pretty awesome!

During a family photo session, I spend a few minutes getting a classic portrait then quickly move to more fun photos.

I will have a few informal games and activities planned that will allow you to connect and enjoy your time with me (in pretty light, of course!). I’ll be a facilitator, there to gently guide and coach while we enjoy a beautiful evening together.

And, 90 minutes leaves time for plot twists. Kiddo moments happen. There is no reason to feel rushed at a family photo session. So if you need to tend to a little one, know that get it and I already planned a few extra parenting minutes. (Side note: I’m a mother of four. There’s not much your kids could do that would faze me.)

I book my sessions during the time just before sunset. During that 90 minutes, the light changes a lot. I work with that light very intentionally moving clients to slightly different areas within our chosen location to create the most stunning images I can for you.
