Selecting a Vermont Senior Photographer

And, How My Old Job Makes Me the Vermont Senior Photographer for You

How do you pick a Vermont senior photographer? Find someone whose art resonates with you. Find someone who will photograph the beauty that is YOU — just as you are now.

I love working with teens! I can’t wait to hear about your adventures and ambitions. I love the excitement and nervousness that come with the transition to “official” adulthood. And, of course, photographing the beauty of authentic humans is my thing. I’m also willing to bet that you share my frustrations with my old job!

Vermont Senior Photo Sessions

Many seniors are looking for photographs that show the depth of their personality and passions. They may want to be photographed near the site of their cross country races and at home with their musical instrument. They may also want a few photos with a parent or with their beloved dog. And, of course, they will need to narrow it down to that one yearbook photo.

These seniors are looking for digital images to share on social media. Along with their families, they are also looking for some wall art to honor their coming of age. They will likely gift some prints to extended family.

At your senior photo session, we’ll spent 90 minutes together. We will probably divide our time between two nearby locations. Most Full Senior Photo Sessions include two outfits. I also offer the option to include your family at no additional cost. A family session with a focus on the soon-to-be graduate is a great way to celebrate this milestone!

The goal is always to capture YOU as an authentic human being, YOU as a young adult, YOU ready to make the world a better place! To do that, you need to be really comfortable around me and I need to get to know you.

My “Old Job” was…

Before I was a full-time photographer, I was a high school physics and biology teacher. Give me a chance here, especially if you don’t like school or science class or teachers. I get it! I really, really do.

If you really want to know why I left teaching, you can read some of my older blog posts. But, suffice it to say, I was looking for lots more flexibility, freedom from bells, tests and lockdown drills, and the chance to connect with people in a more authentic way.

It is the rare kid who moves through K-12 education without some big challenges along the way. Public school is great on paper, but it’s a lot messier in real life than most folks are willing to admit. I used to joke that I was teaching photosynthesis because my students “were born 16 years ago.” I think there are better motivations for learning — like interests, curiosities and wonderings.

Why Would I Hire a Former Teacher as a Senior Photographer?

First, I hope you love my photos.

Check out my portfolio to see if my style is similar to your vision.

Second, I get teens.

I have heard every imaginable biology and physics question. (Side note: I had FOUR babies while I was teaching biology — and my students had lots of questions about THAT!) I know that you have a talent (even if you don’t believe me). I know that you are trying to figure out “the right path” for next year and that there is lots of pressure to make the “best choice for you.” (Spoiler alert: there is no one best choice, just lots of great options. As long as you are willing to learn from your experiences, you will be fine.)

Third, I’m not into fluff.

I won’t waste your time. In fact, I stopped assigning homework during my last five years in the classroom so that my students had more time to pursue their passions. You don’t have to pretend to like what 17 year old’s are “supposed” to like. I want to know what you like. I won’t take pictures that feel fake.

Fourth, I’d love to get to know you.

Really, I would. That’s because I want to give your future self a gift: the gift of real authentic images. I want you to be able to look back and remember how you felt as a senior in high school. I promise, some of your feelings and ideas with intensify with time, and then some will shift. Your future self, will be grateful for the chance to look back and see how much you’ve grown.

Fifth, there are no stupid questions!

Really. I’ll help you in any way I can at every step of the way. I know that you are busy and that adults often set deadlines that do nothing but add stress to your life. My booking, session and gallery sharing process is easy — it has all the efficiency you wish school had with none of the… headaches. And, with lots of experience at parent teacher conferences, I’m more than happy to field all the emails your folks have about every last detail.

One Note about Timing…

Most schools need yearbook photos by mid-October, accordingly it’s best to get senior photos done sometime over the summer or early in the school year. Since, I’m no longer teaching, my schedule is very flexible especially on school day afternoons.

I hope to hear from you soon! In the meantime, let’s keep in touch over on Instagram!
